At Redbridge Community School, staff receive regular training in all aspects of teaching and learning and every teacher takes the Fundamental 5 into account when planning and delivering their lessons.
We believe that the following five principles are at the core of successful teaching and learning and, ultimately, of the progress every child makes.
Importantly, the Fundamental 5 are underpinned by metacognition – teaching students to think about how they learn, reflect on what works best for them, and become more independent learners and ready for the world beyond Redbridge.
The Fundamental 5 are:
- Disciplinary Literacy – helping students read, write and talk like experts in each subject, so they can access learning more confidently

2. Assessment – checking what students know and understand, then using this information to plan their next steps, both in and between lessons

3. The iTeach Cycle – our clear structure for planning and delivering lessons, ensuring teaching is consistent and effective across the school and reducing the cognitive load for students

4. High Participation – making sure all students are actively involved in lessons, not just a few, so everyone has the chance to contribute and learn

5. Guided Learning – giving the right level of support, at the right time, so students can build independence while still feeling supported
By placing the Fundamental 5 at the heart of our approach, we create classrooms where students feel confident, engaged, and are able to achieve their very best.
