BBC School Report 2018

This term, our creative writing club became young BBC reporters charged with reporting about International Women’s Day for BBC School Report 2018.

On Thursday 14th of March, the students went out onto the streets of Lyndhurst and Shirley, asking the public a range of questions about International Women’s Day.

In addition to this, two students (Ethan and Nathan) interviewed Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test. Ethan also managed to interview John McDonnell, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer!

Interestingly, our survey results showed that 40.2% of the general public believe that men and women are still not equal, and 76.6% did not know that there was an International Men’s Day the 19th of November.

In these photos, our BBC School Report team are working hard and writing up the reports after the day out interviewing the public.

We were fortunate to have a visitor from the BBC (David Haynes) to help us in the newsroom . In the image on the left, he is supporting Jack in the writing of his article.

BBC School Report 2016

On Thursday 11th March, 12 More Able year 8 students from Redbridge Community School visited West Quay in Southampton. As part of their BBC News Reporting, the students interviewed the public about the Junior doctors’ strike. The students proved themselves to be enthusiastic journalists with confident interview techniques and strong senses of perseverance!

Overall, the BBC School Reporters found that most members of the public sympathised with the Junior doctors going on strike. The general consensus seemed to be that the strike was necessary because doctors are key workers and their job is incredibly important for society. The girls even managed to find and interview a real doctor!

On return to their Redbridge newsroom, the students spent the afternoon writing up their reports, using their newly acquired journalism skills, and posting Tweets about the strike.

BBC School Report 2015

On Thursday 19th March 2015, Kobie and Shannon were invited to participate in the BBC School Report. Both pupils, accompanied by Miss Thorne and Mrs Wood, went to BBC Solent and had the opportunity to speak live on air with presenter, Julian Clegg.

The pupils were able to act as reporters for the morning. They discussed their Hearing Impairments and gave advice to listeners who may be suffering from the same difficulties.

After their experience, both pupils were given a tour around the Radio and TV recording studios, including the studio for BBC South Today.

BBC News School Report gives 11-16 year-old students in the UK the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience.
Using lesson plans and materials from the BBC website, and with support from BBC staff and partners, teachers help students develop their journalistic skills to become School Reporters.

In March, schools take part in an annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them on a school website, to which the BBC aims to link.

School Reporters in March 2014 produced a stunning array of content with more than 1,000 schools across the UK making the news on the biggest ever School Report News Day.

The next News Day is Thursday 19 March 2015.

BBC News presenter and former teacher Huw Edwards is working on School Report.

He said: “Over the years I’ve run many journalism workshops in schools. So I’ve seen how much fun it can be and how much can be learnt when there are real deadlines, real audiences and real standards to meet. “I’m involved because I want to give young people the chance to make the news themselves, and I want to share the principles of good journalism.
