Attendance is essential for pupils to get the most out of their school experience, including for their attainment, wellbeing, and wider life chances.
Every effort will always be made to ensure pupils can be taught in person by attending their school or, if appropriate and possible, attending a safe alternative site. However, there may still be some exceptional occasions when school leaders or the local authority decide it is not possible to open safely, or where opening would contradict guidance from local or central government.
If restricting attendance for pupils is the only viable option, Redbridge Community School will endeavour to:
- Provide high quality Remote Learning which is in line with the curriculum maps being followed by the students in school
- Provide a programme that is of equivalent length to the core teaching pupils would receive in school
- Set meaningful and ambitious work in all subject areas so that students can follow their usual timetable
How will my child access Remote Education?
Google Classroom is an established method of communication that we use at Redbridge to set homework and send subject specific messages to a class, so your child will be familiar with this package. Each subject will have its own Google Classroom where resources and instructions will be posted – invites will have been sent to your child’s Gmail at the start of the academic year.
If Remote Education is needed, we will expect your child to:
- log in to Google Classroom using their school Google account and make every effort to follow their normal timetable
- complete all assessment tasks in their Google Classrooms for the day
- check their school Gmail account regularly for updates, announcements and any changes made to their Google Classroom
- email their subject teacher or Assistant Head of Year whenever they need support or advice
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others.
Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:
- written feedback sent via email or Google Classroom for work submitted
- online platforms used by the school have immediate feedback for students
If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. Please contact your child’s Head of Year as soon as possible and we will:
- issue or lend laptops or tablets to pupils
- issue or lend devices that enable an internet connection (for example, routers or dongles)
- provide printed materials needed if necessary and to include for practical needs in creative subjects such as Art provide further information on how pupils can submit work to their teachers if they do not have online access
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and our teaching assistants/SENCO will contact home regularly to ensure students are supported and can access the work.
