KS3 Subject Intent
The Outdoor Learning programme develops well-rounded, confident, responsible students who strive to do their best. Through the outdoor environment, students aspire to achieve their full potential across all areas of study. Progressive activities enable students to develop their self-confidence, skills, independence, sense of responsibility and aspiration in an environment of social interaction and teamwork. The school values (aspiration, excellence, respect and opportunity) and RESPECT, an ethos underpinning the content and delivery across the programme are integral to the successes accomplished by the students.
The full content of the curriculum is flexible and determined by the needs of the students in the year and class.
KS4 Subject Intent
Outdoor Education at Key Stage 4 offers students the chance to develop confidence, teamwork, and leadership through practical, hands-on experiences in the natural environment. At its heart, Outdoor Education is about discovery — of new experiences, new challenges, and being the best versions of themselves.
Students in Year 9 follow the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Sport (Outdoors Pathway), which combines classroom learning with exciting outdoor challenges such as navigation, expedition skills, team-building and leadership tasks. Through these experiences, students learn how to stay safe outdoors, respect the environment, and recognise the physical and mental health benefits of being active.
Our aim is to help every student discover their strengths, build resilience, and develop key life skills such as communication, problem-solving and responsibility. The course also opens pathways to further study and careers in sport, outdoor education, and the wider adventure industry.
Students in Years 10 and 11 through the Endeavour Pathway further develop their outdoor learning knowledge and skills, with an emphasis on leadership and responsibility. Across the remaining years students learn the skills required for leadership, how to be leaders and look at opportunities to put their leadership into action. They become reflective practitioners and develop resilience and perseverance that is reflected in other areas of their study.
Students have a say in their studies, choosing areas of learning, courses, qualifications that interest them. ASDAN Short Courses are included in this range and are flexible, portfolio-based programmes designed to credit hours of activity and skills development across a range of topics and curriculum areas.
