SUBJECT

3D Design

KS3 Subject Intent

3D design at KS3 is designed to be an inclusive and engaging opportunity to develop confidence, resilience and expression. As with Art, investigating, developing, recording and presenting are key. Students are first introduced to these disciplines within the context of Textiles in year 8 as part of the Creative Arts rotation.

Within the rotation time frame, students develop, practise and demonstrate their acquisition of knowledge and skills in an artistic, meaningful and critical way. The KS3 scheme of work intends to spark curiosity with a taste of the cultural, historical and industrial importance of 3D design

Learning is brought to life through the combination of discussion, demonstration and exposure to relevant equipment, artists and artwork. Depth is added to the creative experience through the acquisition of skills through experimentation with media such as clay, plastics, foams and wood

Regardless of whether students go on to choose Textiles at KS4, the department intends to prepare students with transferable skills such as confidence, communication, imagination and the ability to take on and respond to constructive criticism

KS4 Subject Intent

At KS4, students will study Edexcel GCSE art and design, with a specialism in 3D design. Students will build upon their enjoyment and passion for creativity, gaining access to specialist equipment and facilities. Students will complete 60% coursework and then 40% will be a project and practical based 10 hour exam

Existing knowledge and skills from KS3 will be built upon with students introduced to the concept of independent personal projects with the starting themes of Environment and Identity

Students have increased freedom to discover and source their own cultural and artistic links. Critical analysis of these artists and designers allows students to develop and refine their own creative practice, influencing their planning, designing and thinking. Independence and resilience are developed through exposure to techniques, media and equipment as students are asked to experiment and record in a personal and imaginative way.

The KS4 3D curriculum aims to inspire our young designers to think outside the box and equip their future selves with imagination and creativity. The course also includes a number of trips such as the V&A museum in London and many opportunities to explore creative careers such as links with the Arts University in Bournemouth.
